Camille O’Sullivan. The Assembly Rooms. Julia Pascal.

The French have a phrase for artistes like Camille.  Bête de scène.  It means a singer or performer who knows how to seduce her audience.  Camille has been performing ten years at the Edinburgh Fringe but she is new to me.  This woman has a huge presence and charm onstage and her voice is hot and almost raspy.  Her range is extraordinary from blues to ballad from rock to confessional.  Although her show is hugely produced she can go simple and her version of Jacques Brel’s Amsterdam was all the stronger for having no accompaniment.  Camille is also an actor and the range here is also notable.  She clowns, she dances gracefully, she fills the stage.  Camille really rocks.
